Historia
Los miembros de la banda están influenciados por los grandes del rock psicodélico, rock progresivo, hard rock y heavy metal, como Black Sabbath, Queen, Cream, Jimi Hendrix, Deep Purple, Pink Floyd y Led Zeppelin, aunque siempre buscaron un sonido propio que los diferenciara de las bandas de la época. Esta búsqueda los llevó al estilo metálico atronador, crudo y lleno de energía que se apartaba del sonido blues típico del heavy metal, en sintonía con los experimentos previos de Black Sabbath, Scorpions y los primeros Queen (si bien ambos grupos siempre jugaron con otros estilos y composiciones) y finalmente definido por ellos a mediados de los años 70s. Este suceso marcaría el principio de la era de la Nueva ola del heavy metal británico, culminando en grupos como Motorhead, Venom y Iron Maiden.
Con su álbum debut, Rocka Rolla, en el año 1974, el sonido de la banda estaba más orientado hacia el hard rock, con algunos tintes progresivos. Sin embargo, a partir de su siguiente álbum Sad Wings of Destiny (1976), el sonido de la banda evolucionó definitivamente hacia el heavy metal (como bien se puede ver en los álbumes posteriores Sin After Sin y Stained Class), llegando a su máxima expresión con el álbum Hell Bent for Leather (1978) y, más aún, con el exitoso álbum British Steel, en plena era de la NWOBHM y los álbumes posteriores. A partir de su álbum homónimo Ram it Down y el posterior éxito Painkiller (1988 y 1990, respectivamente), la banda endureció aún más su sonido, tornándolo más atronador y acelerado, acercándolo más hacia el speed metal y utilizando técnicas complejas de guitarra eléctrica, como el sweep picking y el shredding. A partir de entonces el sonido de Priest se volvería más agresivo. Con los álbumes Jugulator y Demolition, la banda acentuó ese estilo, acercándolo más a lo que estaba en apogeo en la época, el groove metal, entregando el trabajo vocal a manos de Tim Owens, luego de la partida de su principal vocalista Rob Halford en 1991.
Judas Priest suele ser considerada como la banda que terminó de definir el sonido propio del heavy metal ya que los llamados precursores (Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin y Black Sabbath, principalmente) incluían otros géneros, como el blues, el rock progresivo y el hard rock en sus composiciones. Incluso Black Sabbath comenzó un proceso de experimentos de sonidos dentro del heavy metal desde su tercer álbum Master of Reality, que más tarde se conocerían como stoner rock y doom metal. También se les identifica como pioneros en la indumentaria característica del heavy metal: el cuero, las tachas y los accesorios de metal. Esto se hizo público a través de su influyente vocalista, Rob Halford, que usó dicha indumentaria cada vez que se presentaba en público, induciendo al resto de la banda (y a las demás bandas de la época y posteriores) a hacer lo mismo. Judas Priest ha vendido más de 75 millones de álbumes alrededor del mundo.
